FUTURE EVENTS

"Out of the Darkness, Into the Light"
One step closer to Suicide Prevention in youths ages 12 -21.

Three high school students and one young male age 21 have died recently as a result of Suicide.  These tragedies have affected Interact Members and many others at Person High school and in the community.  Everyone wants to do something--some write poetry, some painted or drew pictures, and others wanted to make a plaque or memorial in their memory.  These are all part of the healing process, but Interact wants to do more.

We want to do something that will help prevent this tragedy from ever happening again to one of our own, to one of our classmates, to one of our friends.

"When we lost our first student this year, we knew we had a serious problem.  When we lost our second, we knew we needed serious solutions," says Mrs. Lisa Lamb (Interact faculty advisor).  "Everyone was saying 'something needs to be done', but no one was stepping to the challenge."  Interact has accepted that challenge.

ACTION PLAN

1) American Foundation for Suicide Prevention:  Interact will join the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which is the leading organization for research and education on depression, suicide, and prevention.
2) "Out of the Darkness" Walk Interact, joining others nation-wise, will hold a candlelight, silent walk down Main Street.
3) "Into the Light" Rally:  After the walk, everyone will blow out their candles, and we will have a moment of silence in the darkness.  Then the lights will come on, music will play, and we will have a 90-minute rally.  We are scheduling musical groups, dancers, artists, poets, and speakers.

PREVENTION PLAN

•   Raise $1,000 to join the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

•   Plan and participate in the "Our of the Darkness" Community Walk and the "Into the Light" Community Rally.
•   Conduct Peer Counseling Training for students, calling them "Interact Friends"
•   Provide Teacher Training to watch for the warning signs of depression, drug abuse, and suicidal tendencies, such as cutting.
•   Arrange to send a booklet to all Person County parents to look for danger signs in their children, such as depression or anger.
•  Give a pamphlet to sixth and ninth graders annually on what they can do to prevent suicide in their friends, family, and in themselves.
•   Offer a Financial Guide for surviving a loss to suicide.
•   Make the Walk and Rally an annual event.
